Generative AI was dropped like a bomb on schools all over the world, with no resources or support to help teachers or students adapt. Chatbots were designed to help experts work more efficiently. They were NOT designed for novices and students. How can they be used to support rather than hinder learning? Is it even possible?
This talk will share initial results of a large study in writing courses at UC Davis, designed to build AI literacy and improve appropriate writing support—including for multilingual students who are not native speakers of English. The talk will also share strategies for motivating students, to avoid letting AI think and write for them.
